India's oil bill, trade and the rupee
The speed at which a change in the oil price reaches India's import bill, the share of the trade gap it explains, and the flows that financed the gap: services exports, foreign portfolio money or the Reserve Bank's dollar sales. The desk sets the trade, oil, forex reserves and liquidity topics side by side, month by month.
Four published topics, read as published
Overview: latest readings
In Aug 2026 India spent US$16.7 billion on petroleum imports, against US$13.3 billion a year earlier. The goods deficit was US$26.9 billion and the services surplus US$16.5 billion, leaving a combined gap of US$10.3 billion.
The rupee averaged ₹95.64 per US dollar in Oct 2026, 8.2% weaker than a year earlier.
Each series keeps its own latest month: trade arrives about two weeks after the month, RBI's dollar trades about two months after, Brent and portfolio flows within days. Months are matched on their last day and a missing month is never filled.
Oil price and the petroleum import bill
Transmission from Brent to the petroleum import bill
Over 113 months from Apr 2017 to Aug 2026, each US$10 a barrel more on Brent than a year earlier went with about US$1.5 billion more on India's monthly petroleum bill a month later (95% interval US$1.1 billion to US$1.9 billion; r 0.85). That is roughly US$18.1 billion a year. Brent averaged US$124.8 in Oct 2026 (to 27 Oct), up US$60.3 on a year earlier; at the same rate that would add about US$9.1 billion a month. Volumes, discounts and the product mix also move the bill, so read this as an association, not a forecast.
| Brent leads by | Matched months | Pearson r | US$ billion a month per US$10 a barrel | 95% interval | Independent months, about |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Same month | 113 | 0.76 | 1.36 | 0.91 to 1.80 | 26 |
| 1 month · chosen in advance | 113 | 0.85 | 1.51 | 1.14 to 1.88 | 26 |
| 2 months | 113 | 0.79 | 1.41 | 0.99 to 1.83 | 26 |
| 3 months | 113 | 0.68 | 1.21 | 0.70 to 1.71 | 26 |
Both series are changes over twelve months (Brent in US dollars a barrel, the bill in US dollars billion), which removes the season and most of the slow growth in volumes. The one-month lead was chosen before looking: a cargo is priced on its loading month and lands about a month later. The other leads are shown so the choice can be checked, not picked after the fact. The interval widens the ordinary least-squares error for month-to-month persistence. Volumes, the discount on Russian and other crude and the product mix also move the bill, and none of them is in these rows.

These are the monthly pieces of the external account, not the whole of it: remittances, investment income, direct investment, loans and non-resident deposits arrive only with the quarterly balance of payments, on the balance of payments topic and the forex topic's quarterly bridge. So the lines do not add up to the change in reserves, which also moves with the gold price and other currencies.

Every monthly series on the desk against every other, over the months both were published. The rupee series starts in 2021, RBI's dollar trades in 2014 and trade in 2016, so the cells have different sample sizes.
Coefficients need at least 24 matched months. ★ marks a Pearson 95% interval that excludes zero after allowing for month-to-month persistence; ⊂ marks a pair linked by construction, so the two are not independent evidence.

Lead–lag: Brent against everything else
Pearson r between Brent crude, monthly average (US$ a barrel) in one month and each other series the stated number of months later. Lead 0 is the same month.

Of the 40 cells with an interval, about 2 would exclude zero by chance alone; 16 do. Reading across many leads and series is a search, so treat an isolated ★ with no neighbouring support as likely noise.
Outside pairs linked by construction, the strongest same-month co-movement is Brent with oil bill (r .83 over 125 months, interval excludes zero). 17 of the 33 independent pairs with an interval exclude zero; about 2 would by chance. The largest later-lead coefficient for Brent is with oil bill 1 month later (r .89); test it before reading it as a lead, since this grid is a search.
Methods and reproducible inputs
Pairs match exact months; a month without both values is dropped, never filled. Pearson r is computed on the values and Spearman ρ on their ranks. The 95% interval uses the Fisher transform with an effective sample size n × (1 − ρx·ρy) / (1 + ρx·ρy), where ρx and ρy are each series' lag-1 autocorrelations over consecutive matched months; it needs 12 consecutive links and is not shown otherwise. Coefficients are suppressed below 24 matched months.
Brent and the trade balances are monthly levels; portfolio flows and RBI's dollar trades are the month's net amount; the reserve change is month-end to month-end; the rupee is the change in its monthly average. Levels that both trend over a decade can correlate for that reason alone; the oil section above uses twelve-month changes for that reason.
- Brent · Brent crude, monthly average (US$ a barrel). EIA spot price via FRED, averaged over the month's trading days. The latest month can be partial. global-oil-gas
