India — UPI Digital Payments
Primary evidence: NPCI UPI volume, value and the average payment derived from them.
Research · India
UPI payments set against the size of the economy, household consumption and consumer prices: whether payments are becoming more frequent, larger, or only dearer in nominal terms. Comparisons use only periods with published evidence.
Linked evidence
Primary evidence: NPCI UPI volume, value and the average payment derived from them.
Household spending benchmark: private final consumption expenditure at current prices (national accounts) and gross GST collections, by fiscal year.
Price and credit comparison: MoSPI combined CPI inflation (fiscal-year average), bank credit growth and the Sensex return.

From the UPI snapshot
In FY 2024-25, UPI volume was 185.9 billion payments and the average payment was ₹1,402. The year before, the average payment was ₹1,524. Snapshot india-upi-npci-2026-09-ba2a1e85d0c5.
Volume up and value up is more payments. Volume up and the average ticket down is smaller payments. The comparison uses fiscal years where both NPCI series exist. It does not say whether households bought more goods.
From the UPI, tax and monetary snapshots
In FY 2024-25 UPI carried ₹260.6 lakh crore, 82% of India's nominal GDP and 1.45 times what households spent on consumption that year. In FY 2022-23 it was 53% of GDP. A payment rail can carry more than all consumer spending because it also moves money between people and accounts, so UPI value is not a measure of what households bought.

Nominal GDP and private final consumption expenditure are MoSPI's national accounts on the 2022-23 base, as the tax topic publishes them; consumption on that base starts in FY 2022-23, so earlier years show GDP only. CPI is the fiscal-year average from the monetary desk. Growth after prices is (1 + value growth) ÷ (1 + CPI inflation) − 1. Row IDs for every cell are in the copy block of the matrix below.
Compare published observations
Set a UPI measure beside nominal GDP growth, combined CPI inflation, bank credit growth or market returns. Fiscal years end in March; only exact matching years enter the coefficient. UPI is a payment rail, including transfers, so these relationships do not measure household consumption or causation.
volume-growth and cpi-inflation show a moderate inverse co-movement in the same period (Pearson r=-0.72, n=7, r²=0.53). Read this as joint movement, not as the share of the outcome caused by policy. Small samples and overlapping accounting identities can inflate r. The slope is percentage points of cpi inflation per one unit of the selected UPI measure. Leave-one-year-out Pearson r: -0.860 to 0.000. This desk suppresses coefficients below five matched years; a missing value can also mean a series does not vary.

UPI snapshot india-upi-npci-2026-09-ba2a1e85d0c5; comparison snapshot india-monetary-conditions-fy2012-2026-v2. Nominal payment growth is not inflation-adjusted unless the measure says so; average ticket is value divided by volume. The early years are UPI's adoption, when growth ran to several hundred per cent, so a few years dominate any coefficient. Annual aggregation hides monthly swings, and testing several measures and lags can produce chance correlations.
Whole-system comparison
Every fiscal-year series on this desk against every other. With at most seven matched years and UPI's adoption years in the sample, read this as a map of what to test once monthly data is published, not as evidence.
Coefficients need at least 5 matched fiscal years. ★ marks a Pearson 95% interval that excludes zero after allowing for fiscal year-to-fiscal year persistence; ⊂ marks a pair linked by construction, so the two are not independent evidence.
Same-fiscal year co-movement
Pearson r on exact fiscal year matches; each cell shows its own sample size, because the series start at different dates. Select a cell to read the pair in full below. Teal is positive, rust is negative; darker is stronger.

Pearson r between UPI transaction value growth, nominal (% on the year before) in one fiscal year and each other series the stated number of fiscal years later. Lead 0 is the same fiscal year.

12 cells have a coefficient, but none has an interval: the series are too short for persistence to be estimated, so read every value as exploratory. Reading across many leads and series is a search, so treat an isolated ★ with no neighbouring support as likely noise.
Outside pairs linked by construction, the strongest same-fiscal year co-movement is UPI value with CPI (r −.73 over 7 fiscal years, no interval). 0 of the 3 independent pairs with an interval exclude zero; about 0 would by chance. No later lead of UPI value clears its interval against another series.
Pairs match exact fiscal years; a fiscal year without both values is dropped, never filled. Pearson r is computed on the values and Spearman ρ on their ranks. The 95% interval uses the Fisher transform with an effective sample size n × (1 − ρx·ρy) / (1 + ρx·ρy), where ρx and ρy are each series' lag-1 autocorrelations over consecutive matched fiscal years; it needs 12 consecutive links and is not shown otherwise. Coefficients are suppressed below 5 matched fiscal years.
Growth rates compare one fiscal year with the one before. UPI's fiscal-year series starts in FY 2017-18, so growth starts in FY 2018-19 and no pair has more than seven years: no cell has enough consecutive years for an interval, and every coefficient here is exploratory.

Orders per store needs both counts from the same company release. Quick commerce has no approved snapshot, so that flag is blank.
Monthly CPI is now published (the inflation topic, and RBI's reprint in the liquidity topic). What a monthly comparison still lacks is UPI itself: the UPI snapshot carries only January to June 2025 by month. NPCI's monthly history from April 2016 would give over a hundred months to pair with CPI and GST. Annual figures are never repeated into monthly rows.
| Question | Measure and matching rule | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Are payments becoming more frequent? | NPCI transaction-volume growth and value per payment, fiscal year to fiscal year. | Available from the UPI snapshot |
| Are nominal payments outpacing prices? | UPI value growth against fiscal-year average CPI inflation; compare rates, not rupee levels with an index. | Available above, as growth after prices |
| Are payments growing faster than the economy? | UPI value against nominal GDP and household consumption on one national-accounts base. | Available above; consumption from FY 2022-23 |
| Do payments move with GST month by month? | NPCI's monthly UPI history beside monthly gross GST and CPI, at least 36 matched months. | Needs NPCI's monthly history in the UPI snapshot |
| Are quick-commerce orders rising per store? | Same company's orders and average active stores for the same quarter. Quarter-end stores alone are insufficient. | Awaiting approved filing rows |
| Are baskets larger in real terms? | Same company's order value divided by orders, then deflated by a matching price index. Gross and net order value remain separate. | Awaiting approved quarterly rows and price alignment |
| Does UPI growth lead quick-commerce growth? | Quarterly UPI growth and company order growth, with a chosen lag, common calendar, matched quarters and at least five pairs. | Not estimable yet |
Candidate primary filings: Eternal and Swiggy. Company metrics have changing definitions and coverage; no India-wide quick-commerce total is inferred from them.
